Vincente Lopez y Portana - Spanish, 1772 - 1850
Oil o Canvas
When Sebastian, a Roman military captain, was discovered to be Christian, Emperor Diocletian ordered himto be executed by archers. A Christian widow, Irene, and a companion found Sebastian near death and nurse him back to health. Loez chose to depict this religious story not in a traditional, somber style, but instead used vivid colors and creamy brushstrokes to create a sensuous vision that is at odds with the inherent horror of the event. Especially renowned for his portraiture, Lopez was appointed first painter to the king of Spain in 1814.

Patti Neale (zoisrus) > Oval Basin - about 1550
attributed to Bernard Palissy - French
Lead glazed earthenware
Palissy developed his distinctive "rustic-ware" by making casts from actual shells, plants, and reptiles. He then attached them to ceramic forms that he decorated with runny, lead-based glazes.
